tourmaline
Tourmaline is classified as a semi-precious stone. This gemstone can be found in a wide variety of colours.
Brightly coloured Ceylonese gem tourmalines were brought to Europe in great quantities by the Dutch East India Company to satisfy a demand for curiosities and gems. Tourmaline was sometimes called the "Ceylonese Sri Lankan Magnet" because it could attract and then repel hot ashes due to its pyroelectric properties.

Tourmaline has a variety of colours. Iron-rich tourmalines are usually black to bluish-black to deep brown, while magnesium-rich varieties are brown to yellow, and lithium-rich tourmalines are almost any colour: blue, green, red, yellow, pink, etc. Rarely, it is colourless. Bi-coloured and multicoloured crystals are common, reflecting variations of fluid chemistry during crystallization. Crystals may be green at one end and pink at the other, or green on the outside and pink inside; this type is called watermelon.
Tourmaline is the enchanting rainbow-coloured birthstone for October. Tourmaline is the rainbow jewel of the gem world. No other gem is available in such an impressive array of colours.
Tourmaline is the traditional wedding anniversary gift to celebrate an 8th wedding anniversary.
